What a Cooler Failure Actually Costs
A 24-hour wait is fine for a homeowner. For a restaurant, it isn't.

6 Warning Signs Before a Cooler Fails
Most walk-in failures give you 48 hours of warning. These are the signs.
Temperature Running 2–3°F High
A walk-in cooler that's holding 40°F instead of 37°F is working twice as hard. That's compressor stress, not a thermostat drift. Call before it runs 50°F.
Condenser Fan Running Constantly
If the outdoor condensing unit never cycles off, the system can't maintain setpoint. Dirty condenser coil or failing compressor. Both are fixable before they fail completely.
Ice Buildup on Evaporator Coils
Heavy frost on the coils inside the cooler means the defrost cycle isn't working. Left alone, the ice blocks airflow completely and the cooler stops cooling.
Water on the Cooler Floor
Puddles inside mean the drain line is blocked or the defrost pan is overflowing. It's also a health code issue during inspections.
Unusual Noise from the Compressor
Clicking, grinding, or a hard start sound when the compressor kicks on. A failing compressor usually gives you a few days of warning before it locks up completely.
Door Gaskets Cracked or Pulling Away
A bad door seal forces the compressor to run 30–40% longer to compensate. It's a $60 fix that prevents a $600 compressor repair.
"Walk-in went down on a Thursday afternoon. I called three numbers before I got a live person. He came out the same evening, diagnosed a bad capacitor, had the part in the truck, and we were back at temp by 9 PM. Saved the whole weekend's prep. I've used him for two years since."
