July in Litchfield County runs hot. Your AC quits at noon on a 94-degree day. You're not getting a tech out in an hour. You're getting put on a wait list behind every other homeowner who ignored the same warning signs you did.
I've been repairing HVAC systems in this county for 30 years. These are the signs I see over and over in the weeks before a system fails completely. Most of them are fixable in a single visit if you catch them early. None of them get better on their own.
Your AC should cycle on and off throughout the day. If the compressor runs for hours and the house stays at 78 when you've got it set to 70, something is wrong — low refrigerant, a failing compressor, a dirty coil, or a duct leak. Running long hours doesn't mean the system is working harder. It means it can't do the job at all. Every hour it runs in this condition is wear you can't get back.
This one's obvious when it's bad, but it often starts subtle — the air is cool but not cold, or one room is noticeably warmer than others. Low refrigerant is the most common culprit. The refrigerant doesn't get "used up," so if it's low, you have a leak somewhere. Recharging without finding the leak is a waste of money. A tech needs to find where it's going before adding more.
Ice on your AC looks harmless. It isn't. It usually means the evaporator coil is frozen, which happens when airflow is restricted (dirty filter, blocked return vent) or refrigerant is low. A frozen coil can't remove heat from the air. If you let it keep running, liquid refrigerant can flood back to the compressor — and compressor replacement is a $1,200 to $2,500 repair depending on the system. Shut the system off and call.
A well-maintained AC runs quietly. You hear the fan, you hear the compressor cycle. What you shouldn't hear is metal-on-metal grinding, a high-pitched squeal, or a hard bang when the unit starts. Grinding means the motor bearings are failing. Squealing usually means a belt or a bearing. The banging on startup sometimes means a loose part hitting the housing. All three are cheap fixes when caught early, and expensive ones when the motor or compressor fails as a result.
Your AC pulls moisture out of the air as it cools it. That condensate drains through a line to a floor drain or outside. When the drain line clogs — which happens from algae, dust, or debris — water backs up into the drip pan and eventually onto your floor. Left long enough, it damages drywall, subfloor, and joists. A blocked drain line takes about 20 minutes to clear. The water damage from ignoring it takes considerably longer to fix.
Connecticut summer rates from Eversource aren't cheap to begin with. If your July bill is $60 or $80 higher than last July and you haven't changed your habits, your AC is working harder than it should. A dirty condenser coil, low refrigerant, or a failing capacitor all force the compressor to draw more power to do the same job. A tune-up often cuts that back down and pays for itself in two months of lower bills.
Most residential central AC systems last 15 to 20 years with proper maintenance, or 10 to 12 without it. If yours is pushing 12 years old and you can't remember the last time a tech cleaned the coils, checked refrigerant, and inspected the electrical connections, you're overdue. A pre-season inspection catches the small failures before they become full replacements. It's a $120 to $180 visit versus a $4,000 to $8,000 system replacement.
If your system won't turn on at all or you smell burning near the unit: shut it off at the breaker and call. Don't run a system that's producing a burning smell — that's an electrical issue that can turn into a fire hazard.
What to Do Right Now
Check your air filter. If it's gray and clogged, replace it before you call anyone — a blocked filter causes half the problems on this list and costs $8 to fix yourself. If you replace the filter and the problem persists, that tells you something else is going on.
Walk to the outdoor unit. Is there debris packed around the condenser fins? Grass clippings, leaves, and dirt block airflow the same way a dirty filter does. Clear a 2-foot radius around the unit and clean the fins gently with a hose if they're visibly clogged.
If neither of those fixes the problem, it's time to call a tech. The earlier in the season you do it, the faster you get on the schedule.
When You Should Skip the Repair and Replace
Three situations where I tell homeowners to consider replacement rather than repair:
- The compressor is failed and the system is over 12 years old. A compressor replacement on an old system often costs 60 to 70 percent of a new system. Put that money toward a new unit with a warranty.
- The system uses R-22 refrigerant. R-22 (Freon) was phased out in 2020. The remaining supply is expensive, and a system that needs repeated recharging of R-22 is going to cost more every year. Replacement makes financial sense.
- You've repaired the same component twice in three years. Some systems develop chronic issues. At some point, you're throwing money at a system that's going to fail anyway.
In most other situations — bad capacitor, clogged drain, dirty coil, low refrigerant from a small leak — repair is the right call and costs a fraction of replacement.
One More Thing About Timing
I start getting flooded with calls the first week temperatures break 85 degrees. Every year it's the same. Homeowners who got a tune-up in April are cool in June. The people who waited get put on a 2 or 3 day wait list in the middle of a heat wave.
Call before you need it. That's the advice.
